Vocalist Sandeep Narayan has been getting full house attendance at his Season concerts.
His posts on his social media page, of his concerts are not merely a package of a picture and the cold details. He has anecdotes to share and this makes good reading.
Here is a recent one, which captures the mood of the event –
Papanasam Sivan’s lyrics paint a divine vision: Lord Sarangapani on the Mrudangam and Sage Narada on the Veena. Performing this piece alongside a living legend like Umayalpuram Sivaraman Mama felt like that vision coming to life.
Having grown up in awe of his contributions to the golden era of Carnatic music, I feel profoundly blessed to now share the stage with him and experience his rhythmic genius firsthand.
A big thanks to our wonderful artistes that day at Vani Mahal – Rajeev Mukundan and B Shree Sundarkumar.
Here is another post, where Sandeep recalls the breaks he got at sabhas in Chennai –
Brahma Gana Sabha holds a very special place in my heart as it was one of the first organizations to “promote” me beyond the afternoon junior slots. I’ll never forget finishing a concert there and being invited into the office of the Sabha Secretary, Mr. Balu, for a coffee.
He asked me point-blank, “Where have you been? How have I not heard of you until now?” I explained my life at the time – shuttling between my academic studies in the US and my musical roots in Chennai, and told him I was in the process of moving to Chennai permanently to take up music full-time. Right then and there, he called his committee members and insisted on moving me to a sub-senior slot.
In an era when “shuttling” wasn’t common and my dedication was often questioned due to my time abroad, that gesture was incredibly validating. I am forever grateful to them for believing in me so early on.
